Prep Ebooks

The preps have started experimenting with the iPads and have created their own ebook with a friend. This involved working together to take and arrange their photos on the page, typing, decorating a background and even recording their own voice reading back their writing. The preps wrote about how they had been a super prep lately and enjoyed collaborating on a project.

Science in the Prep Neighborhood!

Last week,  the Prep Neighbourhood had an introduction to science workshop. We discussed what they thought science was.

"I think it is experiments" "Making potions" "Wearing a white coat" "Making things"

We went on a walk outside in the courtyard and came up with some wonderings about the world.
  • What is the dirt made of?
  • How does our body work?
  • How do trees grow?

We had a conversation about how things exist in the world as either solids, liquid or gases. They came up with different ideas of what they thought liquids, solids and gases were.

Last week we discussed how water can exist in 3 forms and depending on what you do to it, it can change it's state.

This week in our Science workshop, the Preps made a Lava Lamp for each homegroup. We watched 'Silvia's Super Awesome Mini Maker Show' and then we did a shared writing experience - their first procedural text! We recorded it and checked to make sure it was correct.

Then the fun part - the experiment!

Rita visits the Prep Neighbourhood

On Wednesday Rita came and spoke to the Prep Neighbourhood about the library and caring for our books. We are to care for our books in the same way that we care for our friends. Rita was very impressed with the children's listening skills. The library is open at lunch times on Tuesday - Thursday. If you have any school library books at home can they please be returned early next week.

Mathematical Measuring!

This week in maths, the preps have been exploring the concept of measurement through measuring each other's head width, as well as their height. They used different materials to measure and count how long each other were, and made comparisons from their findings.

5 Star Preps

Following a visit from Kevin, the Prep Neighbourhood have been practicing 5 Star Behaviour.

What is 5 star behaviour?
It is the 5 things that Preps can do at school to ensure they will be able to do their best.

1. Listening to whoever is speaking.
2. Be kind and look after each other
3. Looking at who is speaking
4. Respecting who is speaking by not interupting
5. Sitting with legs crossed and with no distractions

End of day meeting areas

Parents and carers are asked to please wait in the Courtyard at the end of each day to collect their child, as one of the homegroups finishes in the Torus. This is an important time of the day as students share and reflect on their learning. We find that children can be distracted if parents and adults are present.  Thank-you for your co-operation.

Just reminding parents that you can now sign up for Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences on Compass. These will take place on Thursday 26th June between 12-7pm. We look forward to celebrating the children's learning together.

Reporter's Office

Robert  (Siena's dad) has very kindly offered to construct the children's new reporter's office. He has looked over the children's designs from earlier in the term and adapted them to create a functional design. Robert started constructing on Tuesday and the children were eager to watch.

Last week the children measured out the length of the perimeter of the Reporter's office in the Maths room during Learning Agreement and discussed effective counting strategies for finding how many unifix blocks we used before deciding to count them by 10s. The children counted and found that there were 519 unifix blocks.

Seeking a parent/helper one hour a week to support a small group of sustainability leaders

We are currently on the look out for a parent (or parents, grandparents etc) who is able to support the Junior School Council students for 1 hour a week on a Friday afternoon. The group is also being supported by Kerri Gibson (assistant principal), Tim Aris (5/6 teacher) and Alexandra Hilvert (3/4 teacher and sustainability coordinator). The role would involve working with a group of 10 committed and passionate students (from yrs 3-6). This role will not require any planning and there will always be a teacher to support you.

At the moment the students are beginning to brainstorm a whole school sustainability celebration day in term 3. This event will involve all students, teachers and interested parents. The Junior School Council's goal is to empower students to take leadership and extend their student voice across our community. This role represents an opportunity to support students to make a positive difference. Please to or email or speak with us if you are keen and please encourage others who you think would enjoy this opportunity.

Constructing a Superhero City

The children have been really excited to create a Superhero City in the big block area during learning agreement. The children have worked individually and in small groups to construct a range of structures for the city. The children have successfully shared the space and the blocks with each other and are getting better at cleaning the space and putting all the blocks away at the end of learning agreement.

Some children have been constructing symmetrical buildings since our symmetrical workshops.
