Importance of context for meaningful learning

Dear Parents,

RE: Commonly Used Words

As beginner readers, the Preps are encouraged to build their word recognition of commonly used words. We distributed these to assist with reading at home, however it is important that the children learn these words in a meaningful context, as this supports the learning and retention of the word recognition.

Strategies for home

-         Focus on a particular word from the list we gave you  if it is repeated in a story.

-         Discuss the pattern in the text. “I can jump. I can swing. I can slide.”

-         Make a meaningful sentence and write it down for them to regularly practice reading. (eg – I can draw.)

Leave it on the fridge to practice; encouraging them to point to each word as they read it.

-         When they can sight recognise the word consistently in other texts the word can be coloured in on the sheet to celebrate their learning.

Happy reading!
The Prep Team J
